Ultrasound-guided Injections

In order to improve accuracy and reduce discomfort many injections will be given with ultrasound guidance. The purpose of the procedure is to relieve pain and discomfort and involves an injection, which is usually a mixture of local anesthetic and steroid medication or an orthobiologic such as platelet rich plasma. The injections are given by me under ultrasound guidance to target the problem area and deliver the medication precisely to maximize effectiveness.

Viscosupplementation

Is the injection of Hyaluronan (sodium hyaluronate) into arthritic joints. It can help with pain relief. Viscosupplementation is used to treat osteoarthritis. Viscosupplementation refers to the intraarticular injection of preparations of hyaluronic acid, a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide that is a major component of normal synovial fluid and cartilage, to relieve pain and improve function. Injections of hyaluronic acid act more slowly than corticosteroid injections but their effect is longer lasting, reaching up to 8 months to 1 year.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelets are components of the blood which contain many growth factors which promote healing. The patient’s own blood taken and centrifuged to remove the red blood cells and most of the white blood cells. A mixture of plasma and concentrated platelets or platelet rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into the joint space to reduce pain.PRP can also be injected into soft tissue structures such as tendons and ligaments to reduce pain and promote healing. PRP is typically used for pain control in osteoarthritis. It can also be used in treat various tendons and ligaments throughout the body which can become lax and painful due to degradation and injury. Platelet rich plasma is a natural treatment which uses the power of the body to relieve pain and promote healing.

Steroid Injection

Steroid injections can be helpful for acute pain relief in a number of conditions. Some steroids occur naturally in the human body. Artificial steroids act like natural steroids to reduce inflammation. They’re not the same as anabolic steroids used by body builders to increase their muscle size and strength. Steroid treatment for arthritis and related conditions can be taken as tablets or given as injections into the affected area. Steroid injections are often recommended for people with rheumatoid arthritis and other types of inflammatory arthritis. They may also be recommended for osteoarthritis if your joints are very painful or if you need extra pain relief for a time. The injection can reduce inflammation, which in turn should reduce pain.

Stem cell treatment using stem cells from patients own bodies

This procedure uses bone marrow aspirate and bone marrow concentrate and is recommended for:

1. patients with moderate to severe osteoarthritis of the knee and other knee injuries ( torn meniscus, medial and collateral ligament )

2. patients with severe arthritis of HIP and shoulders and other joints

Minimal discomfort due to ultrasound guidance facilitating precise placement and adequate anaesthesia. Find out more here.
